Independent schools

In Scotland, independent schools are often called private or fee-paying schools. These are typically organisations with charitable status run by a board of governors. As they are not part of the state-funded system and receive no financial support from government, they are free to set their own curriculum. Depending on the school, children can attend from primary through to secondary school, with some also offering early learning and childcare provision from age three years.

In 2022, there were 91 independent schools across Scotland providing education from primary through to secondary years. Of these, 31 schools catered for Additional Support Needs; 40 had boarding provision; and 14 were denominational schools. Four further schools were proposed, with only two locations confirmed (Perth and Kinross, and Edinburgh) and no opening date.

Notes

While the Scottish Council of Independent schools provodes some more detailed information on private schools in Scotland, it doesnt include every independent school, only 70 schools are currently registered. The independent school census ceased in 2013 and the information provided here can no longer be kept up to date.
