Number of new houses built in Glasgow City Region, 1997-2024

Chart showing the number of new houses built in Glasgow compared to the rest of GCR between 1997 and 2024.

This chart compares the number of house building completions in Glasgow with the number in the rest of Glasgow City Region – made up of East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire. The Glasgow number rose between 1997 and 2008, peaking at over 4,000 houses built in 2008. Since then, it has dropped to be more similar to the figure for the rest of GCR, which has varied between 1,000 and 2,000 per year, dropping slightly between 1997 and 2011 and rising slightly since then – with a peak of 2,716 houses built in the year leading up to March 2023, and then 1,586 houses built in the year leading up to March 2024.

The chart does not break this down by each of the GCR local authorities, but the highest number of houses built among that group was in Renfrewshire throughout most of this period. The local authority with the lowest number varied each year.

New house completions by sector in Glasgow City Region, 2023/24

Chart showing the proportion of new houses which were private and social sector houses in 2023-24 in Glasgow City Region.

The majority of houses built in GCR and Lanarkshire in 2023/24 were private-sector led. Only Inverclyde had a higher proportion of social-sector led new building – with 63% of housing built there being led by the social sector. The highest number of social-sector led house completions was in North Lanarkshire, where 311 social-sector led houses were built, just over a third of all new build completions in the area. The highest number of private-led completions was in South Lanarkshire, where there were 1020 private-led new build completions.

Glasgow is not shown on this chart, as the scale of house building there would make it difficult to see the detail of the other local authorities. However, comparing proportions, 75% of Glasgow new build completions for the year leading up to March 2024 were private led.

Notes

For the chart showing annual rates, the years shown cover the 12 months up until the end of the first quarter of that year – i.e., '2024' is the number of houses built between April 2023 and March 2024. This was done to simplify the chart visually.
