Over the last 30 years, the prevalence of smoking has been decreasing in Europe. Scotland has also seen significant falls in the number of people smoking.
Adult smoking trends across Scottish cities
In 2018, just over a fifth (21%) of Glaswegian adults were regular smokers, slightly higher than Scotland overall (18%). Dundee had the highest rate of regular smokers in 2018 (25%). The proportion of smokers reduced in all Scottish cities and Scotland as a whole between 2012 and 2018.

In 2018, slightly more men were regular smokers in Glasgow (23%) than women (20%). Men were more likely to be smokers than women in all other Scottish cities except for Dundee (27% for females compared to 22% for males).
