Percentage of the population by trans status in selected Scottish cities

Population Trans Status - Scottish cities

Dundee, of all the selected cities, has the highest percentage of the population with a trans status of either non-binary (0.46%), trans man (0.17%) or trans woman (0.14%). Those of other or unspecified trans history or gender identity (0.16%) are slightly greater in Glasgow than the other selected cities.

Around 93% of people aged 16 and over in the selected cities identify as ‘Not trans and does not have a trans history’ in Scotland (excluded from the above chart).

As the question on trans status was voluntary in the Scotland Census, around 6% of people aged 16 and over in each of the Scottish cities chose not to answer.

Notes

Transgender or trans is a term used to describe people whose gender is not the same as the sex they were assigned at birth.

Scotland’s Census included a new question on trans status or history in 2022 for people aged 16 and over. This means that we do not have comparable data for previous Censuses.
