Low-income households in selected Scottish cities 2021LISC21

In 2021, 30% of households in Glasgow reported having a net income of less than £20,000 a year. This was higher than the rates in Aberdeen (22%) or Edinburgh (25%), or than the Scottish average (27%), but lower than in Dundee (32%). An estimated 7% of households in Glasgow had an income of less than £10,000 – a higher proportion than in any of the other cities shown, or than the Scottish average of 6%. 

Looking at the lowest-income households, 1% of households in Glasgow reported having less that £6,000 in household income in 2021. In Dundee, 4% of households reported having less than £6,000 in income. In Edinburgh, Aberdeen the figures was 2% – equal to the Scottish average.

The dates shown here mainly predate the cost-of-living crisis, and so it is not yet known what impact that will have had on people's responses to this survey question.

SHS income figures are based on the income of the highest income householder and their spouse or partner only. In other words, they do not count other adults that may reside in the household.

These data come from the Scottish Household Survey. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic meant a change in methods for the survey, and the results for 2021 are therefore not comparable with previous years. More details on these changes can be found on the SHS site.
