Neighbourhoods

The tenure of dwellings in Glasgow differs by neighbourhood. 

Owner occupation

In 2022, Robroyston and Millerston had the highest level of owner-occupied housing in the city (60.7%) and Sighthill, Roystonhill and Germiston had the lowest (9.4%). The neighbourhood average rate of owner occupation in the city was 46.7% in 2022.

The purple bars in the chart show how many of those homes were owned outright. The pattern is similar to the larger owner-occupation pattern, but with some variation. The neighbourhood with the highest proportion of properties owned outright was Pollokshields West (37%) and the neighbourhood with the lowest was Parkhead and Dalmarnock (7.2%).

Private renting

In 2022, the City Centre and Merchant City area had the highest level of privately-rented housing in the city (42.2%), and Balornock and Balmulloch had the lowest (4%). The average rate of private renting in the city was 16.9% in 2022. Levels of private renting have risen across Glasgow over the last decade.

Social renting

In 2022, Sighthill, Roystonhill and Germiston had the highest level of social-rented housing in the city (74.7%) and Robroyston and Millerston  had the lowest (1.2%) – the opposite of the chart shown above looking at owner occupation. The average rate of social renting in the city was 34.9% in 2022.

The proportion of households who owned their home outright has grown, from 17% in 2001/02 to 23% in 2022. Private renting has also increased, from 8% in 2001/02 to 18% in 2022. Social renting and home ownership with a loan or mortgage have both decreased.
