Commuting to work or study on foot or by bicycle by Glasgow neighbourhood, 2022

Method of travel to work or full-time study (all people age 16-74) on foot or by bike, Neighbourhoods, 2022

In 2022, the proportion of commuters aged 16-64 who used active travel (either walking or cycling) varied substantially across Glasgow's neighbourhoods from 3.5% in Robroyston and Millerston to 47.2% in the City Centre and Merchant City. In Glasgow as a whole, 16.6% of commuters used active travel, 13.2% were on foot (23,978 people aged 16-64) and 3.4% cycled (6,075 people aged 16-64).

Notes

The data shown above is from the 2022 Census.
People who normally work or study at home are excluded from the figures shown and the calculated percentages.

This source is thought to underestimate levels of walking, as the Census question asks for the main mode of travel used on a commuting journey, and multi-modal journeys which include walking but not as the main mode of travel are not accounted for.

Additionally, it is clear that the length of commute will have an impact on how many people walk or cycle to work or study.

A GCPH report, Pedestrian and cyclist casualty trends in Scotland, as well as providing a detailed analysis of casualty trends, outlines trends in modes of travel to work and study in Scotland (see Chapter 4 and Appendix A).
