Glasgow
Volunteering in Glasgow by organisation type
Adults who had undertaken formal volunteering in the last 12 months were asked what kind of organisation they had volunteered with.
The most common answer in both Glasgow and Scotland was that they had volunteered for the local community or neighbourhood, with 31% of Glaswegian respondents and 28% of Scottish respondents choosing this. People were also more likely to volunteer with youth or children's activities.
The least popular types of volunteering across Scotland were political volunteering, volunteering with a trade union, or volunteering with emergency services.
A higher proportion of Glasewegians than the Scottish average volunteered with trade unions or justice and human rights organisations, with adult guidance, advice or learning, with a cultural or heritage organisation, in youth or children's activities or in their local community. The lowest response given in Glasgow was for animal welfare organisations, with 0% of Glaswegian respondents choosing this answer.
Volunteering by SIMD level
Across both Scotland and Glasgow, those living in the least-deprived areas were more likely to volunteer. The gradient from more to less deprived areas is clear, although, in Glasgow, a slightly higher proportion of people in SIMD quintile 2 volunteered than in SIMD quintile 3.
This could be caused by there being more opportunities in less-deprived areas for volunteering, or greater barriers being faced by people living in more-deprived areas.
