Glasgow City Region

Volunteering across Glasgow City RegionChart showing rates of volunteering in Glasgow City Region from 2012 to 2023.

The Scottish Household Survey asks adults whether they have undertaken any formal volunteering in the 12 months leading up to the survey.

Across Scotland in 2023, 18% of adults had volunteered in the last 12 months.  Most of the local authorities in GCR had lower levels, with the lowest in North Lanarkshire, where 11% of people had volunteered in the last year. Both East Renfrewshire (19%) and East Dunbartonshire (24%) had higher levels than the Scottish average in 2023.

Rates were lower in almost all GCR local authorities in 2023 than in 2012, following the pattern of the Scottish average, but they had not dropped consistently throughout this period. The dropped sharply between 2012 and 2014 in West Dunbartonshire, whereas in most other local authorities shown, they remained higher for longer. In East Dunbartonshire, 24% of people volunteered in both 2012 and 2023, but this had fluctuated during those 11 years, with over a third (36%) of people volunteering in 2014.
