Child population in local authorities in the Glasgow City Region, 1991-2023
Glasgow’s child population is much larger than that in neighbouring local authorities in the Glasgow City Region at 97,000 in 2023. It is the equivalent in size to the combined child populations of East and West Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire and Inverclyde.
The child population of almost every local authority in the Glasgow City Region reduced over the last 30 years; with East Renfrewshire being the exception. The largest percentage reduction from 1991 to 2023 has been in Inverclyde where the number of children has dropped by 36%, while there has been a slight increase of 7% in the number of children in East Renfrewshire. Glasgow's child population reduced by 19% from 1992 to 2023.

The percentage of children within all the Glasgow City Region local authorities has reduced over the last 30 years. However, in the last ten years, the proportions of children in two local authorities, East Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire, have started to rise.
The percentage of the total population who are children varies slightly in each local authority. Glasgow has the lowest proportion of children (15%), while in East Renfrewshire one fifth of the total population are children.

The population estimates for 2012-2021 are the rebased mid-year population estimates produced by NRS. The rebased mid-year estimates align the population with Scottish 2022 Census results.
