Glasgow’s child population ranks in the middle compared to the other selected UK cities. Birmingham’s child population of nearly 260,000 is substantially larger than the other UK cities and twice as large as the child populations of other cities, with the exception of Leeds. The child population of Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham have all noticeably increased in the last decade.

The percentage of children within each city's total population has reduced over the last 20 years in the majority of UK cities shown. In 2023, the proportion of children in Glasgow’s population was 15%. Birmingham has a larger percentage of children than the other UK cities with more than one-fifth of the population (22%) being children.

The population estimates for 2012-2021 are the rebased mid-year population estimates produced by NRS and ONS. The rebased mid-year estimates align the population with England and Wales 2021 Census and Scottish 2022 Census results.
