Population estimates for children by neighbourhoods in Glasgow, 2022
The child population across Glasgow’s 56 neighbourhoods varies considerably. In 2022, there were only 133 children living in Carmunnock, while there were 3,284 children living in Baillieston & Garrowhill.
Although overall children make up 16% of Glasgow's population, the concentration of children within each of Glasgow's neighbourhoods varies considerably. In 2022, 5% of the overall population in the City Centre and Merchant City were children, while nearly a quarter of the overall population (23%) in Drumchapel were children.
Trends in numbers of children living in Glasgow's neighbourhoods in the period 2001 and 2022
The child populations of Glasgow’s neighbourhoods have changed considerably over the last 20 years. The number of children in 42 of the 56 neighbourhoods has decreased. The biggest reductions have been in Sighthill, Roystonhill & Germiston (-1,238), Easterhouse (-891), Drumchapel (-845) and Mount Vernon & East Shettleston (-804).
In contrast, there have been increases in the number of children in 14 neighbourhoods within the city. The largest rises have been in Calton & Bridgeton (+834) and Parkhead & Dalmarnock (+704).

The graph above highlights the percentage changes in the number of children by neighbourhood over the last 20 years. The two neighbourhoods that have had the largest percentage reductions in children were Sighthill, Roystonhill & Germiston (-51%) and Carmunnock (-47%). In contrast, the largest percentage increases have been in City Centre & Merchant City (+49%), and Calton & Bridgeton (+52%).
